Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa

The Subclass 482 visa is the most common visa for businesses wishing to bring skilled workers from overseas for temporary work in Australia. The business can be an Australian or overseas business. The visa requires eligible workers to have at least 2 years work experience in their nominated occupation. Holders of a subclass 482 visa can work in Australia in their nominated occupation and may be eligible for permanent residency visa.

The visa has 3 streams:

  • Short-term stream – for people nominated in an occupation on the Short Term Skilled Occupation List. Employers can sponsor staff for a period up to 2 years, or, where an International Trade Obligation applies, up to 4 years.

  • Medium-term stream – for people nominated in an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List or the Regional Occupation List. Employers can sponsor staff for a period up to 4 years.

  • Labour Agreement stream – for people sponsored through a labour agreement. Employers can sponsor staff for a period up to 4 years

Why the 482 Visa?

  • This visa allows employers to sponsor staff for a period of up to 4 years.

  • Businesses which have no representation in Australia may bring employees to Australia to establish a branch, joint venture or subsidiary branches in Australia, or to fulfil obligations for a contract or other business activity in Australia.

  • Applicants can bring secondary applicants with them who may study or work.

  • The 482 visa may provide for applicants who are nominated for an occupation on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List a pathway to potential permanent residency in Australia.

Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) Visa

The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian employer.

The Subclass 186 visa is for businesses wishing to employ foreign workers for a permanent position in Australia. The visa has three streams:

  • Temporary Residence Transition stream – for workers who have been employed for at least 2 years while holding an eligible Subclass 457 visa, or 3 years on a 482 visa.

  • Direct Entry stream – for people who are nominated in an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List with at least 3 years relevant work experience in their nominated occupation.

  • Labour Agreement stream – for people sponsored through a labour agreement.
     

Subclass 186 visa applications involve a two stage process, and York Immigration can assist you in both stages.

Why the subclass 186 visa?

  • It is a permanent visa, allowing the holder to live, study and work in Australia

  • Some family members can be included in the application

  • Eligible for Medicare benefits

Skilled Employer Sponsored (Regional) (Subclass 494) Visa

The Skilled Employer Sponsored (Regional) subclass 494 visa allows skilled workers to be sponsored by regional employers. The visa allows the holder to live and work in Australia for up to five years in a designated regional area. Holders of the visa may be eligible to transition to permanent residency, and family members can be included in the visa.

The subclass 494 visa has two visa streams:

  • Employer Sponsored stream – for skilled workers sponsored by an approved regional employer.

  • Labour Agreement stream – for skilled workers nominated by employers who have a labour agreement

Why the subclass 494 visa?

  • Immediate family members can be included in the application

  • Live, work and study in Australia for up to five years

  • May be eligible for a pathway to permanent residency after three years of holding the subclass 494 visa

  • Travel to and from Australia freely, whilst the visa is valid

  • Eligible for Medicare benefits

  • Designated regional areas exclude Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
     

Training (Subclass 407) Visa


The Training subclass 407 visa allows the holder to travel and live in Australia to participate in occupational training or professional development activities. To be eligible, you must have the equivalent of 12 months full-time experience from the last 2 years. You must also have an approved sponsor who is willing to sponsor you.
 

The subclass 407 has 3 streams:

  • Workplace-based training that is required for registration, membership or licensing

  • Structured workplace-based training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

  • Training to promote capacity building overseas
     

Why the subclass 407 visa?

  • Live, work and study in Australia for up to 2 years

  • Immediate family members can be included in the application

  • Travel to and from Australia freely, whilst the visa is valid.
