Skilled – Sponsored Student Visa (subclass 886)
This category of residency is designed for students who have completed their studies who are sponsored by either:
- a close relative who is Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen; or
- an Australian state or territory.
The subclass 886 visa confers Australian permanent residency on the holder. To qualify for the visa, an Applicant must obtain the requisite number of points based on characteristics such as age, English language ability, skills and qualifications.
Sponsorship by a Relative
The sponsor should be related to the applicant in one of the following ways:
- A non-dependent child
- A parent
- A brother or sister
- A niece or nephew
- An aunt or uncle
Certain undertakings are generally required with this application. This usually involves the sponsor entering into a legally binding agreement with the Australian Government for a prescribed period of time.
These applications involve two (2) stages which may be prepared simultaneously:
- A skill assessment by the relevant authority
- Visa application to the Department of Immigration

Sponsorship by an Australian state or territory
Australian state and territory governments undertake to sponsor applicants where those applicants have skills and qualifications which correspond to skills in demand in their state.
To be sponsored a State or Territory government, you need to agree to:
- live in that State or Territory at least two (2) years;
- inform the State or Territory government of any changes in your address details; and
- complete relevant surveys and provide information when required.
These applications are performed in three (3) stages :
- Skill assessment by the relevant authority
- Application to the State or Territory government for sponsorship
- Visa Application to the Department of Immigration
